Plants & A Trip to Raleigh

Hello, friends.  I hope you've been well.  Our snake plant is blooming, this time with three spikes.  It only bloomed outside before, and only the past two years, so imagine my surprise when I noticed a quite sweet scent one night, when I sat in my chair to read, after McNibs woke me up to go out.  You may get a laugh out of the fact that I briefly entertained the thought of some sort of visitation causing the sweet scent, before realizing it was the snake plant.  I do believe our beloveds can visit us, though I've never had the experience.  It's interesting where thought go, in the middle of the night. :o)  With the likelihood of some price increases or difficulty in getting, I recently picked up a few extras of things at Dollar Tree.  I also saw that my favorite sneakers were a great price, at 70% off, so got a pair to put back.  All these things were made in China, so it seems wise.  The summer clothes and sheets were brought down from the attic.  The bedding was changed out, though with a few more unexpected nights in the upper 40's, the flannels might have been welcome a few more days.

The kiwis are blooming, on both the male and female plants.  Will this be the year we actually get to harvest kiwis?  Time will tell.  All the seedlings in the grow station were fed with seaweed fertilizer.  Most are not really thriving like I hoped they might.  I guess I have plenty to learn about using the grow tent.  J planted out the cucumber seedlings, and replaced the tomatoes that didn't make it.  He's seen flea beetles chewing on the smallest ones, which I've only noticed on eggplant seedlings in the past.  Oh well, at least I grew plenty.  I canned up lentils early in the week, and gave the pups a bath in the outdoor shower.

Usnea & nettle glycerites were strained and bottled.  I made hummer food, and golden paste for the pups.  I traveled with a dear friend to Raleigh, for a concert over the weekend.  We've been friends since I first moved to NC, in 1972.  Yikes, that's 53 years.  It's always wonderful to spend time catching up with her.  We realized a plant nursery with beautiful gardens was having one of their open house weekends, so on the way home Sunday, we enjoyed wandering there.  We both found a few plant treasures.  Mine were a salvia, brunnera and pulmonaria.  The pics below are from there.  Enjoy!

It's a good idea to stock up on thing before while you can, Laurie. We have pulmonaria , or as we call it, lungwort, growing in a shady area and does it ever spread. Pale yellow primroses make a pretty companion to it. Glad you had a good time with your friend!

Hugs
Jane

I think so too. I've had a different pulmonaria/lungwort, and wish it would spread! Do you do anything special to feed yours? I've never tried growing primroses, but will look into it. Thanks for the tip!

Such beautiful plant photos! Happy you were able to get together with your friend. I now believe loved ones visit after passing, although I did not believe until I experienced it. My husband's parents passed and after his mom passed, we were in our living room talking about making a plan for an upcoming vacation to Point Judith, Rhode Island. Point Judith was my in-laws favorite place, and their ashes were actually buried at sea there by the Coast Guard. Anyway, as we discussed this our ceiling light started blinking. It had never done this before. We continued talking and then I remembered my mother-in-law saying a light was blinking one evening after her husband passed and it didn't stop blinking until she began speaking with to her deceased husband. So, I said to my husband "your mother needs you to speak to her". He just looked at me, as if to say, "that's not going to happen" and the light continued blinking. Finally, he acknowledged her, told her that he missed her a lot and that he loved her and the light has never blinked again! I've heard from other people who have experienced the scent, but I haven't experienced that myself yet. Have a wonderful week!

That is so interesting! I'd love to know what they're experiencing, but guess I'll have to wait to find out. Knowing that we go on is such a comfort.

What a gorgeous array of plant life! We have long lungwort at the demonstration garden at one of our libraries, and I will be adding some of the babies to my woodland garden. It is so unique!
I agree with you and Staci that our loved ones are near us after they make their transition. I still feel my mom around me at time. What a blessing.
Enjoy this gift of a day!

I had a snake plant for years and never realized they bloomed! No longer have one, but I know someone who does and I will have to ask them if theirs ever bloomed.
I totally agree that dear ones are nearby, not only near the time of their transition to the other side, but from time to time afterwards. It's a gift.

They do have such pretty gardens. Such a blessing to sense your Mom around you. It's pretty common for me to speak to my loved ones, if something reminds me of them, but I've never felt sure they were near. Have a beautiful day!

Our snake plant is around 20 years old, maybe a bit more. J read that mature ones can bloom, but it's still not all that common, from what we understand. I had no idea the blooms had scent before now. Yes, a gift to have loved ones near.

We never knew they bloomed, until a couple of years ago. It was a surprise, and now to know there's scent too! We had the first kiwi fruits last year, after probably 15 years, but something got them. We're hoping to actually get to try some this year!
